Calling all compassionate sewers. The Sewing Hive partners with Period Pantry of Columbus, OH, on International Women's Day, March 8, 2024. We are on a mission to make a difference and need your help to sew fabric sanitary pads. By volunteering your sewing skills, you can play a vital role in helping females who bravely face the challenges of having a period and insufficient resources for their needs. Join us in this initiative and use your time to sew sanitary pads that will relieve those who want to get back into their daily lives without the stress of being without protection.
Some of you have asked about doing a book club challenge to increase the fun and the incentive for getting out our sewing books and sewing some projects from one or more sewing books we've reviewed as part of the Sewing Hive Book Club.
So, here it is!
The Challenge:
Sew a project from ANY of the books we've reviewed, wear or bring it to the next Book Club and attend that session for FREE. You don't have to have attended the session during which the book was reviewed. All you need to do to get the free session is to email me before the session to let me know you'll be attending! You may also register, show up in your “me-made” from one of the books and get a refund on your attendance fee.
The books we've reviewed so far are:
Make it Simple by Tilly Walnes
Ahead of the Curve by Jenny Rushmore
Sew Beautiful by Kennis Wong
Please mark these dates on your calendars. The book club schedule for 2023:
Building the Pattern by Laura and Saara Huhta Sunday March 19 2-4pm
Everyday Patterns by Lotta Jansdotter Sunday July 16 2-4pm
Sewing Basics for Every Body by Wendy Ward Sunday November 5 2-4pm
I'm looking forward to seeing your creations. We're here to help if you want to tackle a project from one of the books but need some assistance!! Please let me know if you have any questions about the challenge.
We are holding another Sewing Contest!
After seeing the Flower Power Flora In Fashion exhibit at The Ohio Decorative Arts Center of Ohio, located at 145 E Main Street in Lancaster, Ohio, we knew we needed to get on the ball. The exhibit runs until April 23, 2023, and the collection is on display thanks to The Ohio State Historical Garment Collection.
To enter, go to the exhibit, and take a photo of yourself next to the garment or accessory you chose for inspiration. Send that to studo@sewinghive.com to lock in your entry by March 25th.
You have until April 22 at 3 pm to finish your item and bring it to The Sewing Hive. We will have a weekend showing off the garments, which a panel of seamstresses will judge.
On April 23rd, the winner will be announced and photographed with their creation for our newsletter and will receive a $250 gift certificate to the Sewing Hive to be used within six months. Item can be a garment or accessory.
The contest requires at least 3 participants to register, or it will be canceled. We will be in touch to let you know once we’ve received the required number of contestants.
Tell your friends and spread the news!

August 28, 10-12 pm. It’s back! Sewing Hive's free Sewing With Knits Workshop is happening again. There will be a talk and Q and A session by Gail Kelley and Jamie Hevener, founders of The Sewing Hive, on how to sew with knit fabrics successfully. Attendees will receive samples of various types of knit fabrics, notes, and hands-on instruction to test different tools and techniques. Supplies and seating are limited, and registration is required.
Over the Summer we had this event at a local fabric store and it "packed the house."
"We've seen an increase in students wanting to learn how to sew with stretchy fabrics.", says Jamie. The demand for this type of sewing has grown as fashion is about looking great in comfort.
Register online to secure your chair, as space and materials are limited. Bring your sewing machine and all your knit fabric questions.
Tired of staying home Sunday evenings with the dread of the work week again? How about coming out to the Sewing Hive and sewing some lingerie, using our big tables to batch cut out, or just having fun chatting and sewing together with friends? Register for some monthly self-care time.
Fusible Elastic Demo! Join us for Undies Sunday on June 12th from 6-8 pm, for a demonstration of fusible elastic. This product makes sewing underwear super fast and easy. No fussy measuring of elastic and sewing of bindings. Just press it on and zig-zag stitch. We will have plenty of time for sewing together after the demonstration so bring your underwear or lingerie project for some social sewing This session is not intended as a class but as a time to get together with fellow seamstresses to share experiences, tips, patterns, successes, and failures and to SEW fresh new undergarments. There’s nothing like the satisfaction of making your own underwear and nothing like the fit and comfort of custom-made underwear made just for you. Martha will give a short talk at the beginning of the evening on topics relevant to making lingerie (e.g. differences in lingerie elastics, sourcing lingerie supplies, a new pattern review, tips for good stitching on lingerie fabrics and elastics, etc.) The rest of the session will be for you to cut out, sew, share with others, ask questions, and maybe finish a UFO.
Pre-requisite: Students must have taken the Make Your Own Underwear class or the Camisole class at the Sewing Hive, or have successfully completed sewing their own underwear, soft bra, sports bra, or tank top with shelf bra. $20 to participate. Register here.
Meet the instructors and learn about our Fashion Career Prep Program, Jacket Tailoring Modules, Sewing Camps and Sewing Skill Building Curriculum.
No reservations are needed, but masks are required.
We are having a pattern and button sale on each Thursday to raise funds for the Whetstone Community Center in Clintonville.
Some of our awesome neighbors have donated patterns and supplies that we can use as teaching tools. We’ve pulled out the essentials from these generous gifts. Thank you so much for these!
But now we have lots left over and want to share them with you at a super discounted price. Come and see what we have on Thursdays from noon-4pm. This event will be weekly until everything is gone. All proceeds will go to The Whetstone Community Center on High Street in Clintonville.
Come a meet our newest instructor, Lauren Gayle Seal. Lauren graduated from Otis College of Art and Design in California with a BFA in Apparel Design, but her real love is textiles. You can read more about later this week in The Teachers section on our Website.
Lauren will be discussing how to pick the correct fabric for a pattern. I am sure this is an issue for many of us that sew. We love a piece of fabric, the feel, the drape, the colors but we wind up with a garment that just doesn’t drape or hang the way we expected.
I think of a sewing project as having three major pre-project planning components: selecting a flattering pattern, sizing for a proper fit, and selecting the right fabric for your garment.
This is a free talk and demo. You are welcome to bring one pattern and one fabric choice for discussion.. We can’t guarantee that Lauren will be able to evaluate everyone’s pattern/fabric choices, but each one she talks about will add to everyone’s knowledge base.
