Undies Sundays

Tired of staying home Sunday evenings with the dread of the work week again? How about coming out to the Sewing Hive and sewing some lingerie, using our big tables to batch cut out, or just having fun chatting and sewing together with friends? Register for some monthly self-care time.

Fusible Elastic Demo!  Join us for Undies Sunday on June 12th from 6-8 pm, for a demonstration of fusible elastic.  This product makes sewing underwear super fast and easy.  No fussy measuring of elastic and sewing of bindings.  Just press it on and zig-zag stitch.  We will have plenty of time for sewing together after the demonstration so bring your underwear or lingerie project for some social sewing This session is not intended as a class but as a time to get together with fellow seamstresses to share experiences, tips, patterns, successes, and failures and to SEW fresh new undergarments. There’s nothing like the satisfaction of making your own underwear and nothing like the fit and comfort of custom-made underwear made just for you. Martha will give a short talk at the beginning of the evening on topics relevant to making lingerie (e.g. differences in lingerie elastics, sourcing lingerie supplies, a new pattern review, tips for good stitching on lingerie fabrics and elastics, etc.) The rest of the session will be for you to cut out, sew, share with others, ask questions, and maybe finish a UFO.

Pre-requisite: Students must have taken the Make Your Own Underwear class or the Camisole class at the Sewing Hive, or have successfully completed sewing their own underwear, soft bra, sports bra, or tank top with shelf bra. $20 to participate. Register here.

May Sewing Skill Builder - Knowing Your Fabric Choices

Come a meet our newest instructor, Lauren Gayle Seal. Lauren graduated from Otis College of Art and Design in California with a BFA in Apparel Design, but her real love is textiles. You can read more about later this week in The Teachers section on our Website.

Lauren will be discussing how to pick the correct fabric for a pattern. I am sure this is an issue for many of us that sew. We love a piece of fabric, the feel, the drape, the colors but we wind up with a garment that just doesn’t drape or hang the way we expected.

I think of a sewing project as having three major pre-project planning components: selecting a flattering pattern, sizing for a proper fit, and selecting the right fabric for your garment.

This is a free talk and demo. You are welcome to bring one pattern and one fabric choice for discussion.. We can’t guarantee that Lauren will be able to evaluate everyone’s pattern/fabric choices, but each one she talks about will add to everyone’s knowledge base.
